<idAbs>This polygon feature class represents the official boundary of the Eureka Dunes National Natural Landmark (NNL) located in Inyo County, California, within Death Valley National Park. The boundary encompasses approximately 4,270 acres of the tallest sand dunes in California, rising 680 feet above the Eureka Valley floor. Eureka Dunes were designated as a National Natural Landmark on May 5, 1983, by the U.S. Department of the Interior in recognition of their exceptional geological and biological significance. The dunes support three endemic plant species found nowhere else in the world, including the federally threatened Eureka Dunegrass (Swallenia alexandrae), Eureka Dunes Evening Primrose (Oenothera avita eurekensis), and Shining Milkvetch (Astragalus lentiginosus micans), as well as five endemic beetle species. The area also exhibits the rare "singing sand" phenomenon. The boundary was digitized from the 2019 NPS Pacific West Region GIS Group map based on National Natural Landmarks Program data. Attachments are enabled on this feature class to store the original PDF map and supporting documentation. This dataset serves as the authoritative spatial representation of the Eureka Dunes NNL boundary for resource management, wilderness planning, NEPA compliance, and GIS analysis within Death Valley National Park.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This polygon boundary provides the authoritative spatial extent of the Eureka Dunes National Natural Landmark for use by Death Valley National Park staff in resource management, wilderness management, NEPA compliance, law enforcement, visitor services, GIS analysis, cartographic production, and protection of endemic species habitats. The boundary is used to identify areas subject to special management restrictions including prohibition of off-highway vehicles, sandboarding, and horseback riding to protect the fragile dune ecosystem and endemic species.</idPurp>

<suppInfo>Eureka Dunes National Natural Landmark was designated on May 5, 1983, recognizing the area's outstanding natural features. The dunes are located in the remote Eureka Valley in the northern portion of Death Valley National Park at approximately 3,000 feet elevation. The dune field covers approximately 3 miles in length by 1 mile in width and rises more than 680 feet above the valley floor, making them the tallest sand dunes in California and possibly all of North America. The dunes are estimated to be 10,000 years old and represent an isolated "island" ecosystem separated from other dune fields, which has led to the evolution of unique endemic species. Three plant species are endemic to Eureka Dunes: Eureka Dunegrass (Swallenia alexandrae, federally listed as Threatened), Eureka Dunes Evening Primrose (Oenothera avita eurekensis), and Shining Milkvetch (Astragalus lentiginosus micans, candidate for Endangered Species List). Additionally, five beetle species are endemic to the dunes. The area is also known for its "singing sand" phenomenon, where avalanching sand produces sounds resembling a bass organ note or distant airplane. The Eureka Dunes became part of Death Valley National Park in 1994 with passage of the California Desert Protection Act. The area is managed as designated wilderness with strict protections: off-highway vehicle travel is prohibited throughout the park, sandboarding is not allowed on the dunes, and horseback riding is prohibited on the dunes. Foot travel is permitted and primitive camping is available at 10 designated sites at the northern base of the dunes. The boundary polygon was digitized from the March 2019 map produced by NPS Pacific West Region GIS Group, which depicts the official NNL boundary based on National Natural Landmarks Program data. The original PDF map is attached to this feature for reference. Attachments capability is enabled to store supporting documentation including maps, designation documents, photos, and reports.</suppInfo>

<prcStep>
<stepDesc>The Eureka Dunes NNL boundary polygon was digitized in ArcGIS Pro from the March 2019 map (Topo_California_Eureka Dunes_2019.pdf) created by NPS Pacific West Region GIS Group. The PDF was first georeferenced to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 11N coordinate system using identifiable control points from USGS topographic features. A new polygon feature class was created in the DEVA geodatabase with fields for NNL identification, designation information, geographic attributes, significance, management, and data quality metadata. The red boundary line shown on the 2019 map was traced on-screen using the Editor in ArcGIS Pro to create a single polygon feature. Attributes were populated from the map, NNL Program data, NPS records, and field knowledge. Acres_GIS field was calculated from the polygon geometry. Shape_Length and Shape_Area fields were auto-calculated by ArcGIS Pro. Attachments were enabled on the feature class and the original PDF map was attached to the polygon feature for reference. Topology was validated and the feature was saved. The feature class was then prepared for publishing to NPS Portal as a hosted feature service with attachments capability enabled.</stepDesc>
