<idAbs>This point feature class contains road damage assessment data collected by the Student Conservation Association (SCA) Flood Recovery Team during 2024 field operations in Death Valley National Park. The dataset documents point-based road damage features along unpaved roads throughout the park, collected in response to flood events that caused widespread damage to the park's backcountry road network. Point damage types include: Cattle Guard Damaged Driving Surface, Cattle Guard Damaged Gates, Cattle Guard Damaged Wings, Cattle Guard Silted In, Culvert Buried Pipe, Culvert Crushed Pipe, Culvert Full of Debris, Culvert Pipe Exposed, Culvert Pipe Blocked By Vegetation, Graffiti Carving, Graffiti Dirt Drawing, Graffiti Paint, Obstacle Eroded Ledge, Obstacle Hole, Obstacle Rock, Obstacle Other, Pothole Single, Pothole Multiple, Signage Damaged, Signage Missing, and Vegetation Tree Removal. Each record includes the damage type, severity rating (Low, Medium, or High where applicable), depth or height measurements in inches, recommended corrective actions, road name, milepost references, and FMSS asset identifiers. Pothole severity thresholds vary by road classification (2WD Low Clearance, 2WD High Clearance, 4WD High Clearance, and 4WD Rough Road) and consider both width and depth dimensions as defined in the Objective Damage Thresholds document (Version 1.0, January 8, 2024). Point features represent damage less than 2 meters in length along the road centerline; damage 2 meters or longer was collected as lines in a companion dataset (DEVA_GIS_SCA_Road_Damage_Lines). Data was collected using Esri Field Maps paired with Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS receivers operating on a Catalyst Premium subscription with real-time RTX (Real-Time Extended) satellite corrections, providing 60cm horizontal accuracy specification. An accuracy threshold of 6 feet (1.83 meters) was enforced; points exceeding this threshold were not accepted. Attachments are enabled on this feature class to store field photographs documenting damage conditions.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This dataset supports flood recovery planning, road maintenance prioritization, equipment needs assessment, and cost estimation for the repair of unpaved roads within Death Valley National Park following major flood events. It provides spatially referenced point damage assessments with recommended corrective actions to guide National Park Service maintenance operations, NEPA compliance screening for repair projects, and long-term road management planning. Point features complement the companion line damage dataset to provide a comprehensive inventory of road infrastructure conditions across the park's backcountry road network.</idPurp>

<suppInfo>This dataset was collected as part of a cooperative agreement between the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and the National Park Service (NPS) for the Death Valley Flood Recovery Team, 2024. Data collection followed the DEVA Field Data Collection Manual (Version 2, 2024) and the Objective Damage Thresholds document (Version 1.0, January 8, 2024, written and compiled by Emma Rosenau). The damage thresholds were approved by Jamie Weleber (SCA Sr. Program Manager, GIS Technologies), Emma Rosenau (SCA Project Lead, DEVA Flood Recovery Team), and Ben Dunphey (NPS GIS Compliance Manager). Spatial data was collected using Esri Field Maps on smartphones and tablets paired with Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS receivers. The receivers operated on a Trimble Catalyst Premium subscription level providing a 60cm horizontal accuracy specification, using real-time RTX (Real-Time Extended) satellite corrections. An accuracy threshold of 6 feet (1.83 meters) was configured in Field Maps; points exceeding this threshold were not accepted during data collection. Positions were collected in WGS84 with real-time transformation to NAD83. For features within the roadway, the satellite receiver remained in or on the vehicle to collect the point position. For features outside the roadway, the receiver was placed as close as possible to (preferably on top of) the feature being collected. The receiver was kept still during the automatic 5-second averaging period. Features less than 2 meters along the road centerline were collected as points in this dataset. Features 2 meters or longer were collected as lines in the companion dataset (DEVA_GIS_SCA_Road_Damage_Lines). The original data was collected in Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (EPSG: 3857). An associated attachment table stores field photographs linked to individual damage records.</suppInfo>

Point damage records were collected using objective thresholds that vary by road classification (2WD, 2WD High Clearance, 4WD High Clearance, 4WD Rough Road) as documented in the Objective Damage Thresholds (Version 1.0). <stepDesc>Step 1 - Field Data Collection: SCA Flood Recovery Team crews drove the full length of each unpaved road, then collected damage assessment data on the return trip. Point features were collected using Esri Field Maps on smartphones and tablets paired with Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS receivers operating on a Catalyst Premium subscription (60cm horizontal accuracy specification) with real-time RTX satellite corrections. For features outside the roadway (e.g., graffiti, signs), the receiver was placed on or as close as possible to the feature. The receiver was held still during the automatic 5-second averaging period. Each point record was attributed with: road name (from the authoritative DEVA Roads feature class), damage type, severity (Low/Medium/High where applicable based on road classification-specific thresholds), depth or height measurement in inches, side of road, recommended corrective action(s), milepost, FMSS road name, and LocationID. Field photographs were attached to records documenting significant damage, with photographs especially encouraged for graffiti, structural damage (fences, culverts, cattle guards), and impassable obstacles.</stepDesc>

<attrdef>Depth or height measurement of the damage in inches. Measurement method varies by damage type: for potholes, depth is measured by laying a rover rod across the pothole and measuring from the bottom of the rod to the deepest point. For cattle guards silted in, depth is measured from the top of beams to the highest point of silt. For culverts, the height of the opening from lowest to highest point. For cattle guard wings, vertical height from ground to tallest point.</attrdef>
