Description: This polygon feature class represents the official boundary of the Eureka Dunes National Natural Landmark (NNL) located in Inyo County, California, within Death Valley National Park. The boundary encompasses approximately 4,270 acres of the tallest sand dunes in California, rising 680 feet above the Eureka Valley floor. Eureka Dunes were designated as a National Natural Landmark on May 5, 1983, by the U.S. Department of the Interior in recognition of their exceptional geological and biological significance. The dunes support three endemic plant species found nowhere else in the world, including the federally threatened Eureka Dunegrass (Swallenia alexandrae), Eureka Dunes Evening Primrose (Oenothera avita eurekensis), and Shining Milkvetch (Astragalus lentiginosus micans), as well as five endemic beetle species. The area also exhibits the rare "singing sand" phenomenon. The boundary was digitized from the 2019 NPS Pacific West Region GIS Group map based on National Natural Landmarks Program data. Attachments are enabled on this feature class to store the original PDF map and supporting documentation. This dataset serves as the authoritative spatial representation of the Eureka Dunes NNL boundary for resource management, wilderness planning, NEPA compliance, and GIS analysis within Death Valley National Park.
