Layer: NMSU_DEVA_Damage_Assessment_Points (ID: 0)

Name: NMSU_DEVA_Damage_Assessment_Points

Display Field: roadname

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPoint

Description: This point feature class contains road damage assessment data collected by the Student Conservation Association (SCA) Flood Recovery Team during 2024 field operations in Death Valley National Park. The dataset documents point-based road damage features along unpaved roads throughout the park, collected in response to flood events that caused widespread damage to the park's backcountry road network. Point damage types include: Cattle Guard Damaged Driving Surface, Cattle Guard Damaged Gates, Cattle Guard Damaged Wings, Cattle Guard Silted In, Culvert Buried Pipe, Culvert Crushed Pipe, Culvert Full of Debris, Culvert Pipe Exposed, Culvert Pipe Blocked By Vegetation, Graffiti Carving, Graffiti Dirt Drawing, Graffiti Paint, Obstacle Eroded Ledge, Obstacle Hole, Obstacle Rock, Obstacle Other, Pothole Single, Pothole Multiple, Signage Damaged, Signage Missing, and Vegetation Tree Removal. Each record includes the damage type, severity rating (Low, Medium, or High where applicable), depth or height measurements in inches, recommended corrective actions, road name, milepost references, and FMSS asset identifiers. Pothole severity thresholds vary by road classification (2WD Low Clearance, 2WD High Clearance, 4WD High Clearance, and 4WD Rough Road) and consider both width and depth dimensions as defined in the Objective Damage Thresholds document (Version 1.0, January 8, 2024). Point features represent damage less than 2 meters in length along the road centerline; damage 2 meters or longer was collected as lines in a companion dataset (DEVA_GIS_SCA_Road_Damage_Lines). Data was collected using Esri Field Maps paired with Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS receivers operating on a Catalyst Premium subscription with real-time RTX (Real-Time Extended) satellite corrections, providing 60cm horizontal accuracy specification. An accuracy threshold of 6 feet (1.83 meters) was enforced; points exceeding this threshold were not accepted. Attachments are enabled on this feature class to store field photographs documenting damage conditions.
